Competitive sport or recreational fitness activity?

Here at McMurray’s Family Taekwondo, we are a traditional Martial Arts school, so the environment is reassuring and building one another up. At the same time, if you are competitive and wish to indulge upon the sport part of Taekwondo, there are plenty of competitions available for which you will be well-prepared for based on how seriously you take your own training. Martial Arts are very personal journeys. That being said, competition is not for everyone. However, for those who do wish to compete can make it as great and far as they work towards with endless support and resources from the instructors and classmates.

Difference Between Teams Sports and Martial Arts?

In team sports, there are “coaches” which have players. In Martial Arts, we have “instructors” which have students. Sure, there can be a sport side to Martial Arts which is optional. However, the competitors are students testing their knowledge and skills. The teammates are replaced with fellow classmates there to help learn with and build each other up. No one has to fight for the opportunity to place on the team. Martial arts is about learning self-defense, physical fitness, and developing one’s mind. Part of learning self-defense is learning the how and when to apply such techniques, meaning that they are never to be used in an offensive fight but rather ONLY when necessary as the last means possible.

Is Taekwondo all kicks?

Taekwondo translates to “The Way of the Hand and Foot.” There is often a misunderstanding that Taekwondo is mostly or all kicks. Not to be mistaken, Taekwondo trains the whole body how to move and defend itself. Beginners train about 70% kicks, which eventually evens out to about 50%. This is because the legs are big limbs which take time to develop the muscles and the kinetic linking (brain and body connection).

Is there grappling in Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is primarily a striking art. The basics to grappling self-defense will be gradually introduced as you progress in rank. That being said, any specific or general questions about self-defense situations, grappling, or “what-to-do-in-this-scenario” are welcomed.

Will I train weapons in Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is primarily an empty-handed art, meaning that weapons are not an integral part of our training. However, advanced students start to learn some basic work

Can Senior Citizens Train Taekwondo?

Senior Citizens can absolutely train Taekwondo! In Martial Arts, it is best to train around one’s injuries in a way that will not further injure oneself. When done with full awareness of one’s abilities, individuals are often surprised at the improvements seen in stamina, strength, flexibility, and even mental recall (through learning forms and the material). As far as self-defense goes, in a Martial Art school, the instructor and other students can train around one’s injuries and still become effective in applying self-defense knowledge.
